Why Mapleshade’s Victims Were Innocent! by Sparktooth

Sparktooth talks about Mapleshade’s victims.

Art by byStarCat

Yep, it’s happening once again, bloggers. Sparktooth is writing another article! I’ve been unintentionally rereading a lot of warriors books that feature Mapleshade in them. (The Last Hope, Crookedstar’s Promise, Mapleshade’s Vengeance, etc.) So she’s been on my mind lately. And I got to thinking about how the first three cats she killed to avenge her kits(Ravenwing, Frecklewish, and Appledusk) seem innocent. Here’s a list and why I think they are.

Ravenwing:
Apparently, Mapleshade killed Ravenwing because he told her secret about her kits to ThunderClan. But he was just following the Warrior Code. He knew it was wrong to lie, and had to do the right thing by telling Oakstar. It was Oakstar who exiled Mapleshade, not Ravenwing! So why did she follow him to the moonstone and murder him? As if that wasn’t bad enough, uncovering his body was going way too far! I honestly thought she would kill Oakstar, but I guess not.

Frecklewish:
She was so excited to know her brother’s(Birchface) kits would be in the Clan. So of course she would be angry when the truth was revealed. Oakstar sent her to check and make sure Mapleshade left the territory. Apparently, she watched as Mapleshade tried to cross the river with her kits. Maybe she was blinded by grief because Mapleshade lied. I hear that excuse for Mapleshade a lot. And she couldn’t have known the kits would die. I found it cruel when Mapleshade used the snake on her when she knew ThunderClan had no medicine cat.

Appledusk (And Reedshine and her unborn kits):
Okay, I wrote an article defending Appledusk and Reedshine. I’m gonna be quoting pretty much everything from that so if you’ve read that article you can skip this one. Anyway, Appledusk had a right to turn his back on Mapleshade. What would you do if your so-called mate killed your kids? Plus, Reedshine had no idea about Mapleshade, so of course she was trying to get Appledusk’s attention. Appledusk maybe loved her more, or truly belonged to RiverClan. But him leaving Mapleshade is not a good excuse to kill him. When Shellheart left Rainflower she never killed him! Also,, when Appledusk died saving Reedshine and her kits, I was like, “Oh my gosh! That is so sweet!”

So there’s my opinion for you. Do you agree with any of them? Thank you so much for reading and I hope to see you next time! 😀

  • Nice article! I still don’t really like Frecklewish and is meh about Ravenwing and Appledusk, but you really proved your opinion!

  • I agree with most of your points, however Ravenwing probably would have guessed Mapleshade would have been exiled or had a bad punishment but he let it happen even though she was his own Clanmate. But I understand how he was doing the right thing by telling the truth (“The truth is the only that matters, ever.” ~ Hollyleaf 😝).
I have no grudge against Frecklewish, and understand her pain. It must have been hard for her to learn the truth.
About Mapleshade and the river, Mapleshade had to cross the river because it was the quickest way to RiverClan (I think). She knew she had to leave ThunderClan territory as soon as possible or else she could’ve been killed. And since Frecklewish was following her then…..yeah.
I love the idea of how Appledusk died to save his kits and Reedshine. That part I agree with. 🙂
Anyway but Mapleshade was blinded by anger and grief. It covered up the innocence those three cats had. These cats were innocent, but understand that even though they should have lived, Mapleshade’s emotions overrideed her judgement and so she killed them. Besides, she had voices of her kits crying out to avenge them! They were only hallucinations but like I’d want to protect my kits and rid them of their pain. This influenced her decision to kill. They were innocent, but not in the eyes of Mapleshade. She had a choice to either avenge her kits or live with the bitterness of what these cats caused her (what she thought). I guess it would have been best to forgive and forget but Mapleshade wanted to avenge her kits. And that’s just what she did.
Yeah my arguments are probably not valid but I have no intention to argue with you. You can go and argue with Jetclaw or Sky or someone who is a good debater. 😛 I can debate but my logic and sense sometimes is confusing to others (it makes sense to me but whatevs it’s my Foxie logic) and sometimes ends up in a pointless rant so ya. 🙂

  • Sorry, but I have to disagree strongly.

    RAVENWING

You’re right, Oakstar is more to blame. But if Ravenwing had held back and REALIZED THAT OAKSTAR WOULD BANISH A MOTHER AND HER INNOCENT KITS INTO A STORM, MAPLESHADE WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN BANNED!!!

    FRECKLEWISH

She could have at least DONE SOMETHING! Instead of just standing there like, “Yo, yay, these darn kits r ded woot.”

    APPLEBUTT

MAPLESHADE DIDN’T KILL THEIR KITS! SHE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO CROSS THE RIVER OR DIE.

Or maybe Applebutt was a cheating, lying, idiot who realized that if something wrong happened between him and Mapleshade, there was another she-cat he could fall onto to carry on his tainted bloodline.

Ugh I hate these cats so much.

    • I see your points, Sky. While I do respect your opinion, I also disagree.

Ravenwing had no clue what Mapleshade’s punishment would be. He was just doing his job, and knew it was his duty to tell Oakstar. Blame Oakstar for sending her into the storm, not Ravenwing. It was not his decision to exile her.

As for Frecklewish, the book doesn’t exactly specify where she was when it happened. Maybe, just MAYBE, she was too far out of reach to try and help. Or maybe she tried to run down and help at first, but then saw the RiverClan patrol and thought they would save them. Nettlepaw could’ve left out those details when he told Mapleshade that Frecklewish witnessed it. And if Frecklewish could’ve attmepted to help in some way…maybe she was afraid Mapleshade would still be angry at her from her exile, or Frecklewish was blinded by fury that her own best friend lied about her brothers kits. She was so happy her beloved kin’s kits would live in the Clan. Her reaction when the truth was revealed is very understandable, in my opinion.

Finally for Appledusk, (you call him Applebutt, I call him Appledusk) he THOUGHT Mapleshade killed their kits. He wasn’t there to witness it, but beleived that’s what happened. The anger and betrayal he felt from that is probably the biggest influence on him to be with Reedshine instead. And he was honest with Darkstar, which is probably one of the biggest reasons Darkstar let him stay in RiverClan. Mapleshade lied to her Clanmates, and suddenly became mad because of it, killing cats. In the other characters’ eyes, who seems to be the dishonorable cat here? Mapleshade obviously. But that’s just my opinion.

Also, I’d like to point out that killing is wrong, no matter what drove you to do it. Especially like when Mapleshade leads Frecklewish into a trap, and yowls before she leaves, “I hope you die in agony!” Nobody should ever kill. But what’s worse about Mapleshade (and why I don’t like her) is that she still walked in the dreams and haunted other innocent souls. A lot of people say Mapleshade shouldn’t have gone to the Dark Forest, but I think she deserves to be there. If she really deserved to go to StarClan, would she have lied, murdered, and made the lives of other cats miserable just because her kits died? Other queens have lost kits in the series, and they never went mad and began killing. I know her kits kept begging her to avenge them, but from the way they’re described they sound like hallucinations. Whatever the reason, everything that motivated Mapleshade to become evil seems to be driven by the wrong thing, and that’s why I don’t really like her. But I respect those who do, and I’m only writing this to state my opinion. 🙂

      • Mapleshade believed it, though – it was her only connection to her kits, and she was desperate.

So many mights on Frecklewish……. seems pretty clear from Nettlepaw that she was, indeed, close enough.

Applebutt lied to Darkstar and his Clanmates the same way Mapleshade liked to her’s – through silence.

        • What exactly did Nettlepaw say to infer that Frecklewish was close? (I’m talking like pull the paragraph from the book).

Also, Appledusk did tell the truth. He did not deny that he was the kits’ father and was willing to accept any punishment Darkstar might give him. But what do you mean he ‘lied to Darkstar and his Clanmates the same way as Mapleshade lied to her’s–through silence’?

          • Sorry, I don’t have a book…

He didn’t say a word until he realized that he would lose some stuff if he didn’t act all noble and stuff. He also noticed that he had a perfect she-cat to fall onto.

            • It’s fine, Sky. 🙂 The only thing I don’t understand is how you seemed pretty certain Nettlepaw was ‘pretty clear that she was, indeed, close enough.’ (Sorry if I offended you I don’t mean to sound rude). It just confused me.

          • Sky means like how Appledusk didn’t admit he was mates with Mapleshade and that she was having his kits until later. Like how Mapleshade didn’t admit anything either. (At least I think that should be what Sky means) 🙂

      • I’ll build off this since I feel there are some points needing refuting,

Ravenwing as the medicine cat, has a duty to care for cats regardless of clan. He was not in the wrong for telling Oakstar. That being said he should’ve adhered to the kits need to be protected and cared for part of the code. He should’ve advised against kicking out a mother and her kits or at least not in a storm where the kits risk getting sick at least from the rain and cold. In my mind he didn’t help/intervene when kits were endangered and it’s his JOB to care for kits.

Frecklewish, you could argue that she was too far away but she still stood there and watched. She saw kits in danger and did nothing. If she was too far away she should’ve still moved closer as the code says that kits need to be protected. Do I think she let her emotions justify her inaction Sure. But she is not some completely innocent cat, she ignored kits in danger. Did she deserve to die/be blinded for it? No. But she’s no saint.

You keep making this claim of Mapleshade killed her kits which is A. untrue since she was desperate as I argued in your last article you made that claim and B. If Appledusk believed such he’s a fool. I doubt he thought she KILLED them, why the grief, the panic, the desperation to have them be alive if she’d intentionally acted for them to die. If Appledusk thought that, then he’s a hypocrite since him pushing Birchface in the water caused him and Flowerpaw to drown. He claims he had no intention of killing them, that it was an accident, but to turn around and say Mapleshade fleeing to RiverClan after being put on a time crunch to get there during a bad storm and then their kits drowned means she KILLED them he’s a hypocrite. Because then he’s just as much a murderer as Mapleshade then, more so since he put Birchface in the water and the river was much less treacherous then.

Also Reedshine was suddenly pregnant real quick, I have my suspicions that they were already well on the path to being mates. It didn’t take Mapleshade THAT long to enact her revenge on Ravenwing, and Frecklewish for Reedshine to know she was expecting if Appledusk took her as a mate after Mapleshade lost her kits. Leafpool was only with Crowfeather very briefly and she didn’t find out she was expecting for a whole book and then some. I’m not familiar with how it works in cats but I have a feeling Appledusk was already moving on by that point,

However say he wasn’t with Reedshine yet and I follow what theErins said rather than my own assumptions, according to the Erin’s Appledusk supposedly loved Mapleshade, so for him to turn around and tell Darkstar he felt nothing for Mapleshade is a lie to both Mapleshade and Darkstar, plus him having half clan kits with Mapleshade wasn’t some big truth he gave up of his own free will. The proof was right in front of Darkstar, to say anything else would cast him out immediately, because the proof was already there. He didn’t suddenly want to come clean, he had no choice.

Mapleshade also had no choice with her lie, if she was honest well she’d have just been thrown out sooner rather than later. So of course she lied, she wanted her kits to be able to live a decent life, only when Ravenwing Let Oakstar know and Oakstar threw her and her kits out did it all come crashing down. Plus during the time Mapleshade kept it a secret so did Appledusk, he wasn’t forthcoming with the info to even Reedshine who was padding after him. Mapleshade kept it a secret to protect her kits, Appledusk kept it a secret to protect himself and be able to keep his options (Reedshine) open by having it seem like he was still available. So no, Appledusk is the more dishonorable and SELFISH one there.

Now on for Mapleshade going mad, let me explain something to you, Mapleshade went mad because her kits died: because of Ravenwing for telling Oakstar and then not doing his duty to care for kits when Oakstars decree put them at risk, Frecklewish for not even trying to help her kits and instead WATCHING them die. Which all happened because Mapleshade mated with Appledusk whom she thought loved her SO much. And what does Appledusk do after Mapleshade comes to him after losing everything she loved, everything she worked for and everything she’d ever known, what does Appledusk do? He throws her aside like yesterday’s trash because he has Reedshine and their new kits and RiverClan. He does NOTHING to ease Mapleshade’s suffering, he does NOTHING to help her, and in fact he does worse than nothing. Because despite claiming he’d loved her, he doesn’t ask what his now dead kits were called, cause he doesn’t care at that point too important to save face. And he makes it so Mapleshade’s kits are buried where she’ll never be able to visit them EVER.

I don’t blame Mapleshade for being vengeful and hurting. She didn’t just suddenly go mad, it was just one thing after another until suddenly there was nothing left, except the madness that her kits needed to be avenged to be set free which was brought on by being absolutely drowned in grief.

Is Mapleshade right in what she did, of course not, she brutally murdered cats, and haunted their descendants but the more I’ve thought about it. The more I can understand the process her mind and heart went through that led her down that path. And I feel sorry for her, and wish she’d had help when she’d needed it, or StarClan had cared enough about her that they wouldn’t send that sign to Ravenwing that sent things crumbling down for her. Or they’d been so kind to guide one of their warriors they watch over out of the darkness rather than let her drown in it,

        • You’re right… I thank Nettlepaw/Nettlebreeze for at least comforting her a bit.

I just want to give this 1,000,000,000 likes! You are so right, and I totally agree. I feel like StarClan WANTED Mapleshade to be hated.

  • I wouldn’t say any of them were innocent per say like Appledusk was a jerk and cheated on Mapleshade, Frecklewish didn’t help save drowning kits when she knew they were in a river that could hardly be safe. She should have helped them like the Warrior Code demands. True none of those cats were ‘innocent’ but they didn’t need to die. Mapleshade acted irrationally and so did all of these cats, they all can’t get a free pass or be called innocent either. This goes for Mapleshade too.

    • Tysm, Dawn! I just happened to write some articles involving Mapleshade for a little while, because I have a very strong dislike for her. But that’s my opinion.

I feel like she sorta did kill her kits unintentionally. She could’ve went out of ThunderClan territory and waited for the storm to go away before going into RiverClan. Instead she makes her kits go across the river without thinking twice. Anyone could’ve seen how dangerous it was, so why did Mapleshade think three kits barely older than two moons or so could handle it? In my opinion, that doesn’t show very good or considerate parenting skills. But once again it’s my opinion. 🙂

  • I agree with Ravenwing since he was only doing his job, but not so much on Frecklewish nor Appledusk. Frecklewish could’ve done something about the kits, and Appledusk shouldn’t have cheated on Mapleshade.

  • Okay, this is going to sound really crazy… but, I agree.

I know I’m Number 1 Mapleshade fan, but I also believe her victims had perfect right to do what they did. But because I have often thought everything through in Mapleshade‘s P.O.V. I believe she was in the right to attack them, too.

It all depends on how you look at things really 🙂

  • i am totally with you on ravenwing. i stil don’t like freckelwish and appeldusk. appeldusk was cheating on mapelshade the whole time. it where also his kits! and as a good vriend freckelwish could have gone with mapelshade.great article!!!!!!!!!!

    • True true
(this is why I leave the main valid arguments for you, Sky. And Jetclaw and Bramblefire 😛)

    • But Mapleshade didn’t carry her kits. She had them swim across a flooding river in a storm. There’s a VERY big difference there.

      • Hmm could a queen carry all three kits across? Perhaps but it’d still be risky. Also Mapleshade said she’d be right behind them so she did not just leave them to cross and then cross on the stepping stones. Besides the river was FLOODING. How could there be any stepping stones anyway? It was also the fastest way to get to RiverClan if she was being watched and then possibly killed if she stayed on ThunderClan territory any longer. And who was the cat who vanished her and her kits in A STORM? Yes that’s right, Oakstar. She had no choice. I think either way, if she stayed on ThunderClan territory or crossed, she’d be risking her own life as well as her kits so there wasn’t much of any hope. She knew that she was exiled from ThunderClan so she needed to get out of the territory as soon as possible. The river was the quickest way to get to RiverClan and plead for help. Yes, it was flooding. But Oakstar bannished them just right when it was. Like I said, Mapleshade probably would have died and been mocked either way.
Idk if this argument is valid but that’s just what I believe. I don’t wish to argue with you and I understand everyone has different opinions. 🙂

        • How could a queen carry three kits across the river?
The answer is obvious: carry them one by one.
But then perhaps Mapleshade thought they were half-RiverClan, so they should be able to swim by themselves.

          (Bleh, my confusing p.o.v.)

      • ?????

From what I recall, she wanted them to use the stepping stones, the SAFEST WAY ACROSS ACCORDING TO EVERY CAT OF THE CLANS.

        • Yes! I agree. Cause the river was flooded, right? So they wouldn’t have been much help anyway (or they could have but the rushing current could have knocked the crossing cats off their paws).

        • Actually, I own the book Mapleshade’s Vengeance, so I looked to see if she wanted to originally cross the the stepping stones, but it never mentioned it.

“She nudged Petalkit closer to the river. ‘Come on, we need to cross before it’s dark.’ The little brown kit hung back. ‘I don’t want to!’ she wailed. ‘There’s too much water!’ ‘You’ll be fine,’ Mapleshade insisted. She herded Larchkit and Patchkit alongside their sister. ‘I’ll be right behind you.'” –Maplesahde’s Vengeance, pg. 44.

So actually Mapleshade never considered using the stepping stones.

          • But it never mentioned that she didn’t, either. And plus, these books are in third perspective. Maybe Mapleshade was thinking something along the stepping stones lines.

            • That is a good point, only I would point out that even though the books are in third perspective they usually show what the character and/or characters whose point of view the story in told in what they are thinking (if that makes sense XD).
