In Defense of Mothwing by Loyalfire

Loyalfire defends Mothwing’s actions in Darkness Within.

This article is about why I believe people are wrong to be mad at Mothwing for demoting Shadowsight. Quick note before I get started: This article was written before “The Place of No Stars” and I think it will probably have been released by the time this is published so if this problem is solved in the next book I’m wasting your time. Ok, now to the point.

My first point:
Ok, let’s look at the reason Mothwing said to de-mote him. She said that he might hurt cats because of inexperience. Ok, what’s more important: Keeping the entire clan healthy and in good care or pleasing Shawdowsight’s ego. Ok, ego might be going too far. I wouldn’t be pleased. But you have to understand Mothwing’s wishes. Although, the way Shadowclan treated him was terrible. I’ll say that. I wish Shadowclan had treated him better.

Point two:
I don’t see why people are blaming Mothwing. I think if anyone should be blamed it should be Rowanstar or Puddleshine. Rowanstar, because if he had said “no” then it probably wouldn’t have happened. Puddleshine, because he was technically Shadowsight’s mentor and knew the most about this issue. Mothwing was only the one to bring it up because it was a good way to bring it up and Puddleshine had told her too.

Point three:
If you look at Shadowsight’s perspective you can clearly say that he was inexperienced. Look how he was manipulated by Ashfur. Look how he was 100% sure he had the right herbs but he didn’t. In the writing he sounded like an apprentice point of view in my opinion.

Now I’m going to look at the big picture. Mothwing comes to Shadowclan and Puddleshine tells her that he’s concerned about Shadowsight. She studies him and agrees that he might make a mistake in a fatal time. She shares with Puddleshine and he says to bring it up at a good moment. She does this and gets all the blame.
This is Puddleshine’s decision, just her honest opinion, and a nessacary

That is why I think Mothwing made the right decision.

Feel free to give your point of view in the comments!

  • Honestly I agree. I’m saying this as someone who is a fan of both Mothwing and Shadowsight! (Also the current leader of ShadowClan is Tigerstar, not Rowanstar)

Another interesting thing to point out is that Mothwing was manipulated/blackmailed by Hawkfrost with a fake StarClan sign, so it’s not too farfetched that she would take issue with an inexperienced medicine cat who was passing along fake StarClan signs that are getting cats hurt.

  • Nice article, but I still hate Mothwing! I have always, always hated her and the Darkness Within seem made me hate her more! <3

  • Agreed. I do think mothwing was a bit harsh to shadowsight at first but it as probably from the stress of moving clans. Plus shadowsight sharing the vision was one of the reasons she was exiled in the first place, so it makes sense she’d think he was inexperienced.

    • The little black head and shoulders button in a corner. Click it and on the bottom it says register. 😀

  • Well… Now that I’ve read this you’ve sort of changed my mind. I still think it’s unfair that ShadowClan is acting like Shadowsight’s, well… you know. It’s not really his fault, he was small… I’m just mad how he can only treat Ashfur and can’t even get his own herbs!(First Comment?)

  • This was resolved in the new book but there are some things I wanna point out.

    1. If I recall correctly, Mothwing said that Shadowsight can’t be trusted around herbs or injured cats

    2. Everyone acts as if Shadowsight wants to kill them so I think people should cut him some slack

    • As for 2. I agree. As for 1. I do believe Mothwing could have said that better as in something like saying that they need to teach him before he can go unsupervised.

  • good article but i hate mothwing. Just saying. She was worried she would not have a place in shadowclan with 3 medicine cats so she undermined Shadowsight and basically made him an apprentice. and she changed how Puddleshine worked so that it would be exactly how she did it. and then claimed that is was a better way. she barley believed in starclan she should not be a medicine cat. and how do we know that starclan even wants her to be a medicine cat? she was a rogues daughter and her sign to become a medicine cat apprentice was faked by her brother. even though I don’t agree, good article. keep it up!

    • 𝐵𝓁𝑜𝓈𝓈𝑜𝓂𝓅𝒶𝓌(𝓇𝑜𝓈𝑒)~𝐵𝓁𝑜𝓈𝓈𝑜𝓂~She says:

I AM PERSONALLY OFFENDED BY YOU! (I’m kidding I promise, I completely respect your opinions)
She may not have believed in StarClan and only started believing when she had proof, but is there any difference between her situation and Cloudtail’s. He doesn’t believe in StarClan either. Mothwing can be a good medicine cat without the belief in StarClan, in the same way, Cloudtail can be a good warrior without believing in StarClan. If you care so much about her birth, then you are undermining Cloudtail, Stormcloud, Firestar, Leafpool, Squirrelflight, Whitewing, over like half of SkyClan, and a bunch of other cats. StarClan knows she’s a good medicine cat and has never been resentful about her disbelief. And fitting into a new clan is hard, just ask Twigbranch, or Finleap, or Firestar, or Tawnypelt.

    • Ok, as you know I have to disagree. To your points, she didn’t undermine Shadowsight. Remember, Puddleshine and Tigerstar had a role to play in this too. She didn’t change Puddleshine’s ways if I recall correctly, Shadowsight just got it wrong. Actually, I believe that Starclan said that they would have sent a sign but Hawkfrost beat them to it (This might be wrong, feel free to have proof that this is false information).

  • Good points! But I still hate Mothwing. She had no right to just come to ShadowClan and start rearranging Shadowsight’s and Puddleshine’s herb store. I also think she had no right to even SAY that Shadowsight was too inexperienced. If he was, then Tigerstar and Puddleshine wouldn’t even agreed to making him a full medicine cat! In my opinion, Mothwing was just trying to be in control of everything because she’s used to doing so in RiverClan with Willowshine. Go back to where you came from Mothwing! You don’t belong in ShadowClan!!!

  • Great article! I also defend Mothwing.
