Stormpaw takes a look at the choices Hollyleaf made.

There’s a lot of opinions about Hollyleaf. Some hate her and think she deserves the df and some really like her, while others are just neutral on her. I myself really love her, so in this article I will be excusing Hollyleaf’s faults and explaining why it makes sense that she did the things she did.
So the first thing most people don’t like about her is because she killed Ashfur in an attempt to keep him from revealing the truth, but then she herself told the gathering. But imagine if you were Hollyleaf and had everything; loving parents, a loving clan, a life that made sense… but then you find out that all of that was actually false and your life actually didn’t make sense. As if it was all an act or something, and you’re not sure anymore if your parents ever loved you because they’re not actually your parents, are they? Plus you think that your actual mother didn’t care enough about you for her job because she gave you away, and your father refused you when he found out that you were his kids. How would that make you feel? I bet it made Hollyleaf feel unloved, scared of criticism, and thinking she couldn’t trust anyone anymore.
And sometimes if you’re not sure of anything anymore it can make you a bit panicked, and so in her panic Hollyleaf killed Ashfur. And her excuse was that she wanted to keep him from telling the truth at the gathering, but I bet she was just telling that to herself to feel a bit better.
And then she herself told the gathering the truth because she was angry. Angry at Squirrelflight for lying to her, angry at Leafpool for not wanting her enough, and just angry at the world in general! But then there’s the question of why Lionblaze and Jayfeather didn’t react the same way? Well, their boys. If a guy and a girl break up, the guy will be sad for a little but will move on. And what will the girl do? She’ll think her world is ending and that she can’t find anyone else because she was certain that he was her soulmate. Do you get my point?
And so after Hollyleaf did all that, she then tried to force Leafpool to eat deathberries! I love Leafpool too, so I was horrified when Hollyleaf did that. But remember, she’s still full of anger and doesn’t really know what she’s doing. She’s just doing all of these things in hope that she’ll feel better, but it’s actually messing her up. So then after she realizes what’s happening, and what she did, and what she’s doing, she runs away to the tunnel’s because she suddenly can’t cope with all that’s happening. And that’s totally understandable! Don’t some of us think of running away now and again when times are hard? Well, it was hard for Hollyleaf, and she didn’t know what to do. And in a time of panic you don’t think of what will happen when you’re gone, you just think; I really need to get out of here, I need a break.
But while she’s in the tunnel’s she has time to think and feel remorse over what she did. Hollyleaf had a good heart, she was just confused for a moment and unsure of what to do. And Fallen Leaves helped her see that. He helped her see what a good cat she was, and aw- I’m so glad their mates in StarClan. So now Hollyleaf feel’s so guilty, and has bad dream’s of what she did and she’s scared. She’s scared of what would happen if she went back to ThunderClan, scared that she’ll lose control of herself again, and scared that no one will accept her. And everyone’s afraid of all that at some point! (Well, not the “lose control of herself” one, but you get what I mean). So she help’s Ivypool and Blossomfall, and blah blah Lionblaze finds her anddd she returns to ThunderClan with him.
And this is where I really started to love her! She show’s a ton of her true colors after returning. She show’s wisdom, leadership, and a new kind of humbleness. Hollyleaf make’s things right with her brothers and her adoptive parents, and she gains ThunderClan’s respect by instructing them how to fight in the tunnels. She doesn’t demand their respect, she wants to earn it, and she does. And when she attack’s Sol she’s about to kill him so that he won’t make trouble with the clan’s anymore, but then she remembers Ashfur and stop’s herself from killing him in an act of mercy because she was so merciless to Ashfur.
So she lets him go and later participates in the Great Battle where she gives her life to save Ivypool’s and makes thing’s right with Leafpool right before dying. I just loved it, and now all the clan’s remember her with honor and respect. This is one of my favorite maps about her I’ll Be Good || COMPLETE Hollyleaf PMV MAP – Bing video Warning: blood/gore
But before I end this article I wanted to say that Ashfur actually did deserve to be killed. He’s freaking crazy! He was going to murder 4 cat’s because of his obssesive love over Squirrelflight! Why is there a place for crazy ex’s in StarClan? It’s odd.
I used to not like hollyleaf, but her novella changed my mind
Oh my StarClan, the article picture is beautiful.
The article is amazing as well! I was always neutral on Hollyleaf, leaning toward strong hate because of her actions, but after reading your article, I love her! You have me convinced, you made such amazing points! <3
Go Hollyleaf! (And the part that you said Jayfeather and Lionblaze weren't upset because they are boys is really funny and so true! 😀 )
I meant to put “Beautiful” in italics, not bold, I’m sorry 😛
aw thanks Mounty! <33
The part about boys isn’t exactly funny, and in my opinion kinda sexist. That’s like saying all girls are fluff-brained cheerleaders who only like the color pink.
I agree
My friends at school who are girls have never EVER reacted like that In Those sort of situations
The thing about girls wasn’t funny. It was sexist
She didn’t really “panic”. Hollyleaf planned it, planned to kill Ashfur, and did it. Jayfeather and Lionblaze was in the exact same situation as she was, and they didn’t attempt to take such drastic measures. Besides, what Ashfur knew was hardly a threat. “Oh, the Three aren’t Squirrelflights!!” He had no knowledge of the real, biological parents and there was no evidence. With Squirrelflight saying “???what?? Are you crazy?” or something among those lines and the Three helping with the act, the worst will easily be avoided.
I think your point about boys and girls is kind of unfair. It depends on the affection shared between them. A boy can feel like the world’s ending and the girl can be totally cool about it. Besides, this isn’t a situation about breaking up. I’m a girl and I’m really sure I won’t break like Hollyleaf did.
Even if she did it out of anger, that doesn’t excuse her attempted murder. It’s a crime.
Hollyleaf was the one who made it hard for literally everyone. Crowfeather will be shunned again, and obviously Leafpool and Squirrelflight too. Jayfeather and Lionblaze will be stared and whispered at, but Hollyleaf was suddenly “Oh, I’ll just escape the whole thing!!” and leaves the others to face the heavy consequences.
Hollyleaf doesn’t properly own up to her mistakes, she covers it up by saying that Ashfur attacked her first and her killing was only self-defense, and her attempted murder of her own mother is never brought up. 😀 Nice article!
The Ashfur Fire Scene is a bit confusing, but just looking at the title, you can have a perfect explanation of why Hollyleaf wanted to kill Ashfur. Of course, murder cannot be justified in any way, but it can be explained. In this case, murder can be explained to the point of extremes. Imagine this: There is a thunderstorm, and a fire. You, your siblings, and your mother are trapped in your house. Suddenly, your brother’s mentor blocks the only exit, threatens to burn your mother into ashes, and threatens to murder you and your siblings as a punishment for what your mother did to him. So, that can probably give you an short explanation on why Hollyleaf wanted to kill Ashfur. However, I totally agree about your paragraph on girls and boys. It doesn’t matter what gender someone is, what matters is how strongly they feel about with someone! ~ Cloudy
I just meant that girls generally act out more than guys as me trying to explain why Lionblaze and Jayfeather didn’t react as much, but I can understand now why that may have seemed offensive
They actually dont
Cap 🧢🧢🧢
Yeah, there’re reasons behind Hollyleaf’s murder of Ashfur, but I just really dislike the way she handled it 🙂
No offense, but after what you said it seems like ur being sarcastic and/or making fun of the article.I get that that may not be the case, but if it is,plz stop.
It wasn’t intended, so if Stormi felt offended I’ll apologize, but I really was just trying to debate, and I’m just arguing against her points because I disagree on some of them.
I am with Bri. I am too busy to debate.
I’d just like to point out that the time Hollyleaf tried to make Leafpool eat deathberries IS briefly mentioned in the article…
If you’re talking about “and her attempted murder of Leafpool is never brought up”, I was saying that was never brought up in the books, not the article!
haha I don’t think I’ll ever succeed on changing your opinion about something 😛 thanks! Oh, and on the last one – she was about to tell the truth to everyone but Bramblestar covered for her
oh… did we argue about something else, my horrible memory can’t fish that out :p I tend to have a really strong opinion on something XD
But she still went with it and that just kind of bothers me 😀
My views on Hollyleaf are more favorable, but I 110% agree with your thoughts on the girls/boys bit. The fact that Hollyleaf’s a she-cat should have nothing to do with whether or not her actions were forgivable.
Girls don’t act out more than boys. Don’t be a misogynist
This is an interesting article. Here are my thoughts:
Personally I never really liked Hollyleaf. She murders Ashfur, reveals ThunderClan’s biggest secret to everyone, and then after all of it, she just runs away from her problems, only to come back to everyone welcoming her with open arms. On your points:
My thoughts:
1. I’m sure Hollyleaf still felt loved. No one recognizes Squirrelflight and Bramblestar as Hollyleaf, Lionblaze, and Jayfeather’s parents, but to me, they are, since they raised them, and loved them more than their real parents. Bramblestar thought for a long time that Hollyleaf was his daughter, and he loved her, and the secret shouldn’t change that, nor should Hollyleaf think that. Also, if Squirrelflight was willing to tell Ashfur the secret to save Hollyleaf and her brothers, obviously she loved them a lot.
2. I guess Hollyleaf has the right to be angry, but she could have found a way to contain it. I get that it can be hard to contain your anger (even I have trouble with that), but eventually you have to learn to take it out in other ways. I also don’t think that being boys changes how Lionblaze and Jayfeather reacted. I do think how ever, that they have entirely different personalities, which could change how the react to things.
3. I don’t know why Hollyleaf tried to kill Leafpool. I was shocked when that happened too. And then Hollyleaf ran away. Sometimes we all need a break, to process our emotions, but Hollyleaf didn’t do that. She could have run away at first, when she first found out, and then come back after a few days. But she didn’t do that. She left because she didn’t want to face the consequences of her actions. She left long enough for everyone to think she was dead, and when she came back, everyone was so glad she was alive, that no one seemed to care about what she had done.
4. I am glad Hollyleaf decided not to kill Sol and that she fought with the Clans during the Great Battle.
Anyways, that’s just my take, don’t take offense to it.
ofc not, your entitled to your opinions
Amazing article, Stormpaw! I love Hollyleaf’s development in the tunnels! Initially, she thought of the warrior code as the “root of life.” In the tunnels, however, she reflected on everything she did, in a more sensible way. She was evaluating the problems and wondering if what she did was truly reasonable. She decided that killing Ashfur had been all for nothing, and his death should’ve never happened. She sincerely regretted killing Ashfur, and she sincerely wanted forgiveness from her Clanmates. Literally, think of Hollyleaf’s Story as Hollyleaf’s redemption arc! ~ Cloudy
I was nutral on Hollyleaf when she was an apprentice, but I REALLY liked her as a warrior.
I wouldn’t say that Hollyleaf’s actions were exactly EXCUSABLE, but she redeemed herself later. :] I was personally really mad at her when she went around just in general doing stupid things because I was glad that we FINALLY had a goody-two-shoes cat who tries to follow the rules. And then… I mean, ‘The Warrior Code means Everything to me and All, so NATURALLY, I’m gonna go KILL a person and then try to make another person eat DEATHBERRIES, it makes perfect sense!’ I like to think that Hollyleaf reacted the way she did because the warrior code means everything to her, Lionblaze is a piece of cardboard and therefore incapable of reacting to anything, and Jayfeather has magical wisdom and doesn’t really need to care, not because she’s a girl. I mean, that kind of just seems like a stereotype to me, and I’m sure it doesn’t always work out that way in real life. And, this is kind of a different situation here… But Ashfur did kind of have it coming after he tried to cook her. Nice article! :]
Weird, the links aren’t working. Well here’s the video 😛 https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=i%27ll+be+good+hollyleaf&view=detail&mid=27639ECC35A0065AB6C727639ECC35A0065AB6C7&FORM=VIRE
Yessss I totally agree with you Ashfur is just so… Ashfur. If you know what I mean. Hollyleaf totally deserves to be in StarClan!
thank you Sapphiremoon ^^
Great article! 🙂
I always really liked Hollyleaf, and I was really shocked when she killed Ashfur and attempted to kill Leafpool. Despite this, I forgave her, because I can understand her actions. It doesn’t make them right, but I can at least understand. She felt betrayed and alone and angry. The warrior code meant so much to her that when she found out that her very existence went against it, she felt that her whole world was crumbling. Not only that, but she felt that no one loved her, because her real parents gave her up, and extremely hurt that she had been lied to in such a major way.
Additionally, I can understand why she would run away when she did. Her former actions had been done in a haze of anger, and she only just realized what she had done. Not knowing what she could do, she thought she getting away from it all was the way to deal with her bitterness and remorse. Once away from the rest of the Clan, she realized what she had done was wrong and wanted to make it up to her Clanmates, but didn’t know how. Eventually, she was able help her fellows, and, perhaps in her mind, “earn her place” again.
Really well-written/thought article!! Beautiful picture! Thank you for helping Hollyleaf be understood!! 🙂
OMS I LOVE THAT HOLLYLEAF MAP ITS MY FAVORITE MAP OF ALL TIME!!!
Nice article! However, I disagree. Hollyleaf tried to feed Leafpool deathberries because she wanted Leafpool to suffer the wrath of breaking the code. She knew exactly what she was doing. And being panicked is no excuse to kill a cat.
Also the point you made about boys and girls, if you ask me, is extremely sexist. I’m sure that when a breakup happens, both boys and girls are equally heartbroken. And there have been cases in WC where the tom did not handle it well. When Feathertail died, Crowpaw was so heartbroken he nearly commited suicide. Hollyleaf should not be excused from her crimes because she is a she-cat.
Yeah like ashfur. He tries to kill her kids, her dad, posses her husband and um does… some sus things. But of course he wasn’t over dramatic at cause he’s a boy. Sarcastic eye roll
