yesterday my brother asked me if we were past april :’)

At my riding lesson today (don’t worry, masks were worn and I was up on a horse most of the time anyway) I got to ride Cally who I’ve only ridden once before c: she’s always fun but kind of terrifying to ride because she’s a big thoroughbred mare, absolutely gorgeous but huge and very energetic. Before her owner let my instructor take over her training she used to be really spooky and not very well trained, which is why I’ve only ridden her twice. It was very different from my instructor’s wonderful lesson horses I usually ride, A.) because she’s huge, and B.) because she’s got a lot more energy and is much harder to control, but despite being mildly terrified I had a really good ride 😀 😀 I’m also just happy that my instructor thinks I’m a good enough rider to handle her now!!

I go horse riding in France most half term holidays! I’m terrible at it and somehow I passed my ‘galop 1’ last year. 😛 When my instructor gives me harder horses/ponies (I’m small 😛) I always manage to fail her expectations and I fall off a lot when I canter because my balance is bad, but I’m used to it by now so it doesn’t even hurt. 😛
I’ve never actually fallen off before 😛
unless you count the few times clumsy me got my foot caught on the saddle while dismounting and didn’t land on my feet……partially because I have pretty good balance, partially because the horses I usually ride are very bomb proof :] although I suspect if I end up riding Cally more I will eventually run out of luck 😛Ah lucky!!! I have fallen off many times and landed face first in the sand 😛The horses are (mostly) very well behaved, I just have very bad balance!

ooooh that’s great! 😀 i’ve been going to the barn twice a week for lessons too – masks and social distancing required, of course, but yeah 😛 (masks are worn when we’re on the ground, which is about half the time between grooming, tacking up, and cleaning up). the horse I lease and ride, Leggs, is also a big thoroughbred! 😛 a lot of thoroughbreds, especially the ones who came off the track (Leggs didn’t, but there is an OTTB at my barn!) at super spooky, green, and not the greatest in terms of training, unfortunately 🙁 they get started way too early, and honestly the whole racehorse industry is a hot mess, but that’s a story for another day 😛
i personally like the forward horses but yeah, sometimes it can be a little overwhelming 😛 i once was the first person to ride Leggs after he had over a week off, and uh… he galloped four laps in the huge outdoor ring and i had to get off 3/4 through the lesson bc it wasn’t safe anymore. was it terrifying? yes 😛 was i thrilled that my instructor thought i was good enough and maybe could handle him, even if it kinda failed? even more yes 😛
i’ve been riding for about four and a half years now? out of curiosity, do you jump, and about how high?1.) no I do not jump 😛
2.) 0 feet 😛 😛 the closest I’ve come to jumping is when my instructor props a pole up a bit on blocks, putting it maybe 6 inches or so off the ground?
I only go once a week, and sometimes infrequently (this is my third lesson since covid started, my instructor stopped giving lessons for a bit because of the virus), which probably contributes to my lack of skills (although I mostly attribute that to lack of body awareness 😛 ), but it’s been great getting back to the barn.
Cally actually has a kind of interesting backstory, but she was never a racehorse. Her owner worked at a racing thoroughbred breeding stable, and assisted in delivering the foals. She was actually there when California Chrome was born (do you know who he is? 😀 I always tell my friends and their like ‘huh okay’) and I’m pretty sure her story’s correct because I found an race horsing blog that interviewed her. Anyway, Cally was from that same farm I believe and her owner ended up with her but according to listening to my instructor talk to my mom, wasn’t a quite good enough rider for such a antsy horse 😛 Cally also sat unworked for a while before her owner got her, so that didn’t help either. Cally’s a lot better now though, I’ve seen her throw her owner a couple times back when I first started going
which, considering I only go to the barn once a week for an hour and a half or so, that’s not great 😛and she was always spooking, but now she’s settled down more.Mostly I’m just used to the usual lesson horses, who are very easy going, but this was an interesting change. My instructor has 5 lesson horses (Colby, Rory, Dina, Lilly, and Biscuit), plus a younger gelding named Dug who is still learning his manners, but the rest are just boarding at her barn and/or there for training and I don’t get to ride them usually, but there are a couple my instructor has permission to use in lessons when their owners are busy and can’t ride them enough.
