Naming Tips + Name Generator by Cloudypaw

Cloudypaw gives advice on naming Warrior Cat characters!

Hi there! Looks like you stumbled upon my article! It’s Cloudy here, trying to find something useful to do 😉
So it was some time ago (oopsie, a month, and it’ll probably be more when the article will come out), but Kate suggested I will make an article about some name generator that I posted, so I decided to expand a little, and here we go!
So now, when I’m not lazy, here are a couple of things that I name a cat off!
Prefix:
-Appearance
-Can be simple, like Blue for a gray blue coloured cat
-Pattern, like Dapple or Mottle
-something that is similar to the cat, like Stream for a blue gray cat
-Fur style, like Ragged or Thistle (Thistleclaw was named after his spiky fur)
-some disability, like Crookedstar
-After someone
-Cinderheart’s kits, for example
-Bluestar’s kits; she named them after things in the river, so they’ll remind her off Oakheart
-general names that match the Clan (minor characters)
-Some names just sound like a WindClan prefix, right? So don’t waste all your time on unique names, giving minor characters names that sound like a WindClan (for example, can be any clan) saves a lot of time
Suffix:
-Appearance
-this is pretty simple, just something that goes with the prefix and appearance, like -stripe, -fur, and such
-some special marking, like Whitethroat who has a white throat, or Blackfoot after his black feet
-something that the cat did
-Perhaps if the cat won their warrior name by chasing away some creature, they can be named -chaser
-not too many examples, but hopefully you understand what I mean!
-personality
-like -flower or -petal for a gentle cat, -heart for a brave one, -claw or -slash for a fighter
-something to go with the first part of the name
-this is for minor characters, so there’s no need to spend all the time on unique names

But when I’m lazy, I have a name generator which works better than the ones that you just click on a button. It can also help you pick a more ‘character’ other than ‘name’. Let me explain how to use it!
Fill in the blanks:
Leader: ___
Deputy: ___
Medicine Cat: ___
Warrior: ___
Apprentice: ___
Kit: ___
Out of the Clan (kittypet, loner, guardian cats or rogue): ___

Now, let me explain. For the first times you can pick your favorites or least favorites, but after that I usually just use the first ones that I think off.
So let’s say I filled it in like that:
Leader: Skystar
Deputy: Sun Shadow
Medicine Cat: Pebble Heart
Warrior: Hollyleaf
Apprentice: Sweetpaw
Kit: Morning Whisker
Out of the Clan (kittypet, loner, guardian cats or rogue):Bumble

Now, how do you make these names into a cat? It’s pretty simple, actually. First, open Warriors Wiki. And now you just need to follow this pattern:
1 Take the fur colour of the leader that you’ve chosen (Skystar, in my example, so the fur colour will be pale gray) and search it in Warriors Wiki. Then take a look at the results. The first that appeared for me are Gray Wing, Gray Sky Before Dawn, and Splashfoot. I think that the prefix Splash is adorable so I decided to use it. So my kitty’s prefix is Splash! If the results are all names of cats outside the Clans, it might be better not to use them (Dieselfur, for example, sounds pretty awkward)

2 Take the fur colour of the deputy (Sun Shadow, so black) and do the same as before, but this time you’re picking a suffix. I decided on the suffix -fall, so our kitty is named Splashfall

3 Take the prefix of the medicine cat, or suffix if the prefix is too rare (our med kitty is Pebble Heart). Pick the fur colour of one of the results (make sure it goes with the name!). I got yellow-brown tabby.

4 Search the suffix of the warrior (It’s -leaf, because the cat is Hollyleaf) in Warriors wiki, as always. The first result that has something special (like ragged fur, torn ears and such) is set in place. Splashfall has a sleek, scarred pelt!

5 Take the apprentice’s fur colour (tortoiseshell and white, in my example) and search it as always. Take the first result that has a known eye colour, and give your character this eye colour (mine is amber)
6 Now, sometimes a name and description is enough. But if you want you can add Clan and personality, like that! If your kit is Clanborn (the kit that you’ve chosen) then use their Clan as the Clan of your OC. If they’re not, search their eye colour in warriors wiki and the first cat that appears that is Clanborn will be set in place.
7 take the non clan born cat’s fur colour, and the first result that is najor enough to have a personality will be used. Just use a similar personality.

You’re done!!!! I got, “Splashfall, a yellow brown tabby with a sleek, scarred pelt and amber eyes, from WindClan. They’re reckless, ambitious, but try to control their hunger for battle”
You can add gender if you’d like to; I usually give it based on the appearance. Splashfall sounds like a she to me, so this is what she’ll be.
I think I’m done, bye!

  • My results were Feathersong, a dark gray dappled she-cat with pale blue eyes. She is very caring, gentle, and sweet and has long and thick fur. She resides in RiverClan and she is approximately 24 moons old. She is the deputy and she can be bold and confident despite her gentle personality. Her negative traits are that she sometimes overthinks things and sometimes she is so willing to protect her Clanmates that she can be too reckless in battle. She is responsible and reliable and calm and overall a good deputy. ( I used my OCs!)
