I’m not fluent in Mandarin (though I wish I was so I can talk to my family back in the mainland 😛 ), but I did go through 8 years of Saturday Mandarin classes, so I’m pretty sure the subject “I” in general is 我, not 一世 which is more like a single generation, lifetime or era?
Although, I can see where the mix-up might have happened. The first thing that pops up on Google Translate for “I” in simplified Mandarin is 一世. Why that is, I have no idea, since 我 is a lot more common. In all my years of barely picking up Mandarin, I had never used 一世 to refer to myself in a sentence.

Haha, I only know a little bit! My parents emigrated from the mainland and I grew up in Canada, so I’ve had… minimal exposure at best to Chinese culture and my parents are from Shanghai, so pronunciation gets even weirder around there 😛 I do want to learn Mandarin properly one day…

Hmm, not really? This is pretty basic stuff that’s taught, so even I remember some of these things 😛 if you were asked “你是谁？”, you usually say something like “我是【name】” (“I am [name]”) or maybe even like “是我” (“it’s me”) if you know the person. That’s what I hear from my parents when they speak to Mandarin-speaking friends and family 😛
I was under the impression that you were a native speaker? That’s what was implied from your comment. Which one is your first language?
Oh, and just as a side note, please use English as much as possible on the blog! Not everyone speaks or is able to read Chinese, Korean, or Japanese characters, and it would save the mods a lot of trouble since we always have to translate things in other languages if no translation is provided. It’s always more fun to be able to chat and understand each other almost flawlessly 🙂
